Mythology
Egyptian mythology had many gods, and a lot of there society revolved around it. They had many myths and legends about there gods that explained things for example: Ra (a very important god who is also the god of the sun) would fly over the sky during the day and would be swallowed up by Nut (the sun goddess) over the night. Thoth
Thoth was the god of knowledge and writing. He always has a writing palette . He had the gift of hieroglyphic writing. Thoth was a very important god. He was also thought to be some how connected to the moon.
Tefnut
Tefnut is the faithful wife of Shu and mother of Nut and Geb. Tefnut didn't have a human head, she had a lioness head instead. This was very common in Egyptian mythology.
Tawaret
Twaret was the goddess of childbirth she had a hippo head, lion arms and a crocodile tail...YIKES! She did not have any temples dedicated to her because she was a goddess that people would worship in the comfort of there home.
Sobek
Sobek is also part crocodile! Sobek had a crocodile head. Sobek was the god of the Nile, which was a big deal back then. He would protect kings. They had crocodiles in ponds at grand and exquisite temples in honor of Sobek.
Shu
Shu is the god of air. He would hold up nut in order to separate the sky and the earth. Shu was the husband of Tefnut. His name means "he who rises up" so that kind of makes sense because he rises up Nut.
Seth
Seth was basicallcy the bad guy!. He threatened harmony in Egypt. He was the god of chaos. Seth was married to Netphys and murdered his own brother (Osiris) and battled against his nephew in a fight for the crown, that would allow him to rule humans.
Seshat
Seshat was the goddess of writing in measurement. She would often wear a leapard dress accompanied with a star head piece.
Sekhemet
Sekhemet was a very powerful goddess infact her name means "the powerful one". She was the goddess of war. She had a lioness head instead of a human one which as we now know, human heads were not very popular among
Ra
Ra was the most important god in Ancient Egypt. He was the god of the sun and was very important. Ra had a hawk head that was often found with a sun disk on top of it. He was supposedly THE sun too, and would run across the sky during the day.
Ptah
Ptah was the god of craftsmenship, he did not actually have an animal head. Actually in one creation myth he was the one who created the entire world. He just spoke and things began to appear.
Osiris
Osiris was the god of death he looks like a mummified man with a cone like hat that does not lack in feathers. But besides being the god of the death he was believed to be the god who gave the egyptians barley, which was one of the Egyptians main crops.
Nut
Nut is ithe goddess of the sky. She wears a dress covered with stars and stretches across the sky. She is married to Geb and is the mother of Seth, Osiris, Nepthys, and Isis. She was a very important goddess.
Nepthys
Nepthys was a protective goddess of the dead. Pictures of her were often found by coffins. She was married to Seth and was the mother of Anubis.
Ma'at
Ma'at was the goddess if justice,honesty,in harmony. Which was all the things egypt stood for. She was a daughter of Ra. She did not have an animal head, she did however have a feather head dress.
Khrunum
Khrunum was the god of the yearly flooding of the nile river. He had a rams head instead of a persons. He was in some myths the creator of the human race. He apparently molded humans out of clay which is the case in many different ancient civilizations stories.
Khepri
Khepri was the almighty god of creation. He didn't have a human head....instead he had a scarab beetle for a head.
Isis
Isis was a protective goddess, in other words she helped people in need. She had a head dress that was shaped like a throne. Isis was the mother of Horus, and considering that every Pharaoh was supposedly a "living Horus" she was a big deal.
Horus
Horus is a god of the sky. He is often called the protecter of egypt. Every pharoah was allegedly a living Horus. He battled Seth to become the ruler of the living. He won but however, he lost his eye which was eventually restored to him, making the eye a symbol of protection for the Ancient Egyptians.
Hathor
Hathor was the godess of love and joy. She did not have an animal head but she did have animal ears. She had a lovely pair of cow ears. She was the wife of Horus, which as it made Isis, made her a big deal.
Hapy
Hapy was the god of the yearly flooding of the Nile. The yearly flood would make the soil very good for growing crops. which made him very important.
Geb
Geb was the god of earth. He often appeared with a goose on his head. He was the husband of Nut, they had four children together who"s names were: Nepthys, Seth, Osiris and Isis.
Bes
Bes was a dwarvish little creqaturer who was the protecter of women who were with child and new born babies. He wasn't worshipped at a temple...instead people would worship him from the comfort of there home.
Bastet
Bastet was a protective goddess. She had a cats head. Cats were one of her most well known symbols. Egyptians made sculptures of cats in honor of her. She was a daughter of the great Ra.
Atum
Atum was the first god on earth. He allegedly created all the gods. He was a creater god. He has a double crown and has a completely human body.
Anubis
Anubis was a god with a jackal head. He was the god of preserving corpses. Priests sometimes would even wear jackal heads while mummifying. He would watch over priests as they mummify their corpse.
Amun
Amun was a man with a rams head. He was sometimes called the king of gods. He was a very powerful god.
